ABOUT NATIONAL CENTER on YOUTH

Enhancing prevention, treatment, and Recovery Through Science

The National Center on Youth Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery is a leading nonprofit research institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital, dedicated to the advancement of youth substance use disorder treatment and recovery.

youth substance use and addiction is

one of the greatest
public health crises of
our time, resulting in preventable mortality, disease, and disability

Drug and alcohol use disorder rates are increasing at an alarming rate among youth, and at increasingly younger ages. Young people are not simply miniature adults. They undergo rapid neurological, psychological, and behavioral changes during this developmental period and substance use alters healthy developmental trajectories. Early detection and intervention are key to reducing the overall clinical, public health, and economic burden related to alcohol and other drug use. We must develop more innovative options to increase the chances of earlier treatment engagement and improve the likelihood of sooner remission and recovery.
